Rules for texas holdem poker

The popularity of online poker was taken to new heights when in 2003, more than 800 players participated in the No Limit Texas Holdem main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), which offered a huge amount of $2.5 as the prize money.

Incidentally, both the winners of the 2003 and 2004 Word Series of Poker tournament were online poker players.

As the popularity of online poker (Texas Holdem in particular) increased, competitive poker rooms on the internet also started raising the stakes, which encouraged a multitude of newcomers and fortune hunters to take up the online card game.

In theory, rules for Texas Holdem poker are quite clear. It  can be played between up to 22 players. However, most games, including online versions, are played between 4 to 10 players. The chief characteristic that differentiates Texas Holdem from other poker variants is its simplicity. Basically, each player starts with two cards down, known as hole cards, and the main aim is to make their best 5 card poker hand out of the 7 cards, by dealing 5 cards face up (the community cards).

In other words, in Texas Holden rules, the winning round goes to the player with the best 5-card poker hand combining any of their two hole cards and the five community cards.

A typical Texas Holdem game sequence can be briefly summarized as follows:

In the first round of betting after the players are dealt with two cards, three cards (the flop) are turned over, belonging to everyone player’s hand at the table. The 5-card hand is the combination of the flop and the initial two cards.

Another round of betting followed after the first flop and one more card (turn card) is turned over. A third round of betting followed again and then a fifth community card (river card) is turned over.

In the fourth and final round of betting, the remaining players in the pot show their hands, in which the best 5-card hand out of the seven cards is the winner.

During the game, a player may wish to bet, fold (relinquish one's hand), raise (wage an amount that succeeds the previous bet), or check (bet to the next action player sitting to the left without folding hand) in accordance with one’s position in the game.

There are different betting structures in Texas Holdem - Limit, No Limit and Pot Limit. In Limit Texas Holdem, bets and raises are set at a fixed amount whereas in No Limit games, the maximum bet is determined by the number of chips possessed by any player at any given time. In Pot Limit Holdem, the number of bets and raises is limited to the amount of chips that has been accumulated in the pot at a given time.

Texas Holdem has now become the most popular poker variant played in casinos, at home and on the internet today.

Though it can be a complex game to master, beginners can easily grasp the basic rules, and play reasonably well within a few hours of practice. This, combined with the community card game’s fast pace play and demand for strategy, continue to attract players all over the world.
