Psychological Aspects of Playing Texas Holdem
One of the most common psychological aspects attracting people to play online
poker is the prospect of earning quick money.
Online poker rooms offers automatic parameters for measurement since the winning player always gets paid, which allows the player to work for a definite goal - the win. This, coupled with the aspect of the thrills that may reveal themselves with each deal of the hand, has been the key factor behind the popularity of online poker games like Texas Holdem.
There is a strong psychological element of strategy involved in No-Limit Texas Holdem, in which signs like Tells (physical twitches and movements in which one gives away the strength of his or her hand) become very important. Tells are also applicable to online games too though maybe not in the physical sense.
For example, in a live game, shaking hands either mean nervousness or bluffing. Online, if a player ponders for some time and then raises, it is not a bluff. In a Live game, if a player quickly looks at his chips after the flop, it’s probably a sign of strong hand. In an online Limit game, a quick raise on the flop usually indicates top pair.
A skilful poker player, while evaluating what the opponent’s strategy, will always try to think beyond the reasoning level of the opponent.
By
slow-playing, fast-playing, and bluffing, a good player will try to find out what the opponent has, what the opponent think he/she has, and what the opponent think he/she think the opponent has. The player who wins this mind battle will always have a better chance of winning the game.
Psychological skills are based on the type of game being played and the type of opponents in the game.
For instance, in No-Limit games with buy-ins below $100, occasional flop bluffs against a few opponents may be quite sufficient, without using too much psychological strategy. However, in higher stakes games, psychological skills and ploys become very important, in which you need to classify your opponents and, think and act accordingly. Here’s an example:
In No-Limit games, tight/aggressive players are more willing to bet at the pot than call.
Use strong hands to counter their moves and go over the top at them occasionally. Try to bully them into becoming weak/tight players by frequently changing pace. On the other hand, trapping hyper/aggressive players is not that easy.
However, once you have a strong hand such as a set, raise them without letting them know what you have, and play your hands differently.
Another important psychological aspect is to change pace instead of playing too consistently. For example, especially in No-Limit Holdem, when your opponents are expecting you to bluff, you bluff rarely that they'll call you more, and if your bets are usually for value, start to bluff at the pot a lot. Another way to change pace is to play your AQ differently sometimes preflop, or when you hit an A or Q. In No-Limit, bet a different amount, and choose to jam the pot at a different time in Limit.
